Hello everyone! On behalf of Impart (Formerly MAP Academy), I’d like to welcome you to our meet and greet. Here, you can introduce yourself and get to know one another.

As researchers, we had a great time working on the development of this course, and we’re really excited to be sharing it with you! We’d love to know what made you interested in textiles. You can also share what you hope to learn by the end of your journey, and revisit this forum as you complete the lessons.

Hello Amorette! My name is Ahana and I have an avid interest in knowing indigenous textiles and fabrics, along with the history of dye and prints. Although I am partially aware of Indian and most south asian prints, fabrics, textile dyes etc., I am also interested to know in greater detail the legacies of cultural transaction that have occurred in and around South Asia in regards to print and dye making. I was informed about this program from the main Instagram page of MAP Academy. I have a Masters in Comparative Literature and my passion for knowledge on fabrics, textiles and dye/prints has mainly been inspired by the rich heritage of transnational and international prestige enjoyed by India prior to Imperial subjugation beginning from the 1800 onwards. I am interested to trace the journey of the introduction of popular European fabrics such as chiffon, polyester, georgette, cotton vis a vis the Indian traditional fabrics and prints associated with silk, muslin, khadi, pashmina etc., and how the disruption owing to colonization has had a long term effect on the availability and popularity of indigenous dyes and fabrics.

Hello Amorette and everyone else here,

I am Maya an aspiring textile artist and researcher. I have been creating my own works with textile for the past three years, and am constantly looking for new things to learn especially on South and East Asian Textiles. Therefore when I found out about this course on a local newsletter I jumped to join it, just it time before it begins.

I look forward to this course and interacting with all of you.

    Hello Amorette,

I read about MAP Academy from and ArtNet newsletter that I receive daily. The article was about the new online encyclopedia of Indian art: a first of its kind! Congratulations to you and your team!

My fascination with textiles has been lifelong. Now that I am retired, I am exploring my artistic interests and was drawn to your course on textiles. I was born in USA (and live in California), and have been married to a Punjabi for over 40 years, so I have had the immense privilege of visiting India many times, of being gifted saris, suits, shawls and phulkaris from generous friends and family, and I am simply fascinated by textiles, cloth, and the different ways to use them.

I would love to see a course on the unique ways that people use unstitched cloth for their clothing. The turban is a great example of how individuals use unstitched cloth for self-expression (in addition to religious expression).

I love visiting cloth markets in India: the sights, the smells, the sensation of the fabrics: are a feast for the senses!

I am looking forward to viewing all of the videos in your course. Thank you for offering your course worldwide.

    Hi everyone!

My name is Savannah Sinhal and I’m a fashion graduate, an Art Educator and certified Holistic Health Practitioner. When studying fashion, I focused on exploring Indian traditions of textiles and dressing, looking in to the cultural and spiritual connections of what we wear. After graduating, I also studied Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine, specialising in nutrition and herbalism in particular. I now work across both arts and wellbeing, from research and writing, to personal consultancy and teaching workshops. I’m fascinated by the relationship between creativity and healing and working to preserve traditional and ancestral methods of both.

Look forward to getting started with the course and getting to know you all more.

    Hello Amorette,

my name is Eva and I am fascinated by textiles, colour and India, for obvious reasons.

At the moment I am finishing my studies in art therapy, and I mean to write my final papers on plants, their colours and healing properties. I also mean to compare the use of colour in healing in India to that in Europe.

I am sure this course is full of useful information for me!

    Thank you,

    Eva

Hello to everyone. My name is Janet. Now that I have retired, I am busy returning to my long time interests in textiles. I spin and weave cloth for clothing. I am very interested in natural dyes, especially indigo, as well as printing with botanical paste and inks. I was fortunate to spend time in Kerala several years ago as part of an art residency. I love history and the diversity of different cultures. I am interested in the stories we find by studying textiles. Thank you for this class!

Hi, My name is Linda. I run a small e-commerce business selling natural dyes, fibers, handmade products, and much more.

I have had the opportunity to teach both natural dyeing and indigo dyeing workshops around the world. The purpose of the workshops is to give the participants a new skill or to revive a forgotten skill. I have taught in Rwanda, Italy, Turkmenistan, Kazakhstan, Mexico, and India as well as in the USA.

On my travels, I have met some pretty amazing artisans doing beautiful work.

I am passionate about textiles from fibers to the yarns to the fabrics to the printing and dyeing to the finished garments. Of course, my focus is on natural fibers and natural dyes!

I am looking forward to the course.
